Wind Energy Projects in Austria

What projects speak for the Energiewerkstatt in Austria?

The Energiewerkstatt delivered the know-how for half of the installed wind turbines in Austria (469 MW). The success quota for the implementation of projects is 97%. Tauernwindpark Oberzeiring, Windpark Sternwald, Windpark Steinberg-Prinzendorf and Windpark Höflein are showcase projects which illustrate the solution oriented work of the Energiewerkstatt´s professional team.

Tauernwind Farm Oberzeiring

The Tauernwind Farm Oberzeiring was the highest wind farm in Europe at the time of installation (1,850 meters). The extreme weather conditions (ice, snow, strong winds) and the sensible alpine flora and fauna presented a great challenge to the planners. New transport methods were created which made it possible to overcome the long distances.

Customer: Tauernwind Windkraftanlagen GmbH
Installed capacity: 11 wind turbines, 19,75 MW
Start of operation: End of 2002
Special characteristics
  • EU project for researching wind energy in alpine regions
  • Installation in just six and a half months
  • Great precaution was taken to protect nature - e.g. the upper layer of grass was carefully dug out and, after installation, was set back in place.
  • Access road: 11.8 km long, 900 meters difference in altitude
  • Electrical connection: Electrical lines are 20.86 km long and crossed many streams and streets
  • Development of a special transportation concept
  • Transport of the rotor blades by helicopter

Wind Farm Sternwald

Right from the beginning, it has been a basic principal of the EWS Consulting to make sure that there is suitable distance from wind turbines to nearby dwellings. This means that, in a landscape scattered with houses, the only possible wind turbine sites are on exposed summits or in forests free of dwellings. Wind farm Sternwald was the first wind farm to be built in a forest.

Customer: Sternwind Errichtungs- und Betriebs GmbH & Co KEG
Installed capacity: 7 wind turbines, 14 MW
Special characteristics
  • Transport concept to keep disturbance to the forest at a minimum
  • Development of a special installation concept for better protection of the forest
  • Individual installation of rotor blades to prevent additional forest clearance
  • The rotor blades were assembled individually in 105 meters height above the tops of the trees.

Wind Farm Steinberg-Prinzendorf II

Austrian wind experts estimate that the wind energy potential in Austria amounts to three times as much as the total installed capacity of all wind turbines in 2008 (approximately 1000 MW). The utilization of this potential could be possible with just doubling the number of wind turbines. The magic word is "repowering". - In Steinberg-Prinzendorf this method was used for the first time in Austria to replace an earlier generation of wind turbines with 2 MW state-of-the-art turbines.

Customer: Windkraft Simonsfeld GmbH & Co KG
Installed capacity: 12 MW
Special characteristics
  • „Green Meadow" - Wind turbines were completely taken down for the first time in Austria in the course of enlargement of a wind farm.
  • The foundations were completely removed and disposed.
  • An environmental impact assessment was required for the enlargement of wind farm Steinberg-Prinzendorf I.

Wind Farm Höflein

Höflein ist the first large wind farm in Austria with the new clean energy tariff. In recent years, wind energy development had been limited to only single wind turbines! Wind Farm Höflein was approved in 2009 and has been under construction since fall 2010. The wind farm is located in one of the best wind regions in Austia, and will produce 33 million kWh annually.

Customer: WEB Windenergie AG
Wind turbine: Vestas V90
Installed capacity: 12MW (6 WTGs)
Start of operation: Beginning of August 2011
Special characteristics
  • Environmental impact study completed in 2009 by EWS
  • First "modernized" V90 in Austria with new nacelle and external cooling system
  • Deep foundation with firm ground conditions
  • Power feeds into the new tranformer substation Höflein (EVN)
